In a flurry of government digital announcements, including Plans for Change which rely heavily on AI integration, the UK government is now launching an app will include a wallet and digital drivers license.

The app will include multiple government services and offer digital forms of ID, as well as providing an online format to apply for childcare or report lost documents.

The Gov.uk Wallet will be launched in conjunction with the app, and will provide users with the ability to get digital drivers licenses.

At first the app and Wallet will offer driving licenses and Veteran Cards, which will be piloted over the summer. By 2027, the app will offer even more, including DBS and other government-issued credentials.

“For people who choose to use Gov.uk Wallet, they will find it easier to prove they’re entitled to benefits or check their age when buying alcohol or DIY equipment, with more security and trust than ever before,” Peter Kyle science, innovation, and technology secretary, said. “Crucially, it also opens huge opportunities to make interacting with public services much easier by putting people in control of their own data.

“We will be overhauling how the public sector uses technology which is essential to delivering our Plan for Change, and in combination with this new tech for people to use themselves, we are going to slash the time people waste dealing with annoying processes so they can focus on what matters to them.”

The full app is set to be launched in summer 2025, which will offer the app and an accompanying website, which will even allow people to apply for benefits or find a job on their phone.

People can also receive notifications and alerts on topics like application or policy updates that are relevant to their personal profile.

“Having access to their HM Armed Forces Veteran Card via their smartphone will help make it even easier for them to verify their veteran status and access the support and benefits they’re entitled to,” Alistair Carns, minister for veterans and people said, commenting on how the Veteran Card will be one of the first digital offerings.

“This is a government committed to delivering for all those who serve and have served. We’re turning words into action to improve life for every veteran.”
