A fictional nation has reportedly been listed as a free trade partner by the United States Department of Agriculture.

According to a spokesperson for the government department, the Kingdom of Wakanda, home to Marvel’s Black Panther superhero, was accidentally listed as a trading partner to the US during staff tests.

The fictional nation was featured on an online tariff tracker, which included nations such as Columbia, Costa Rica Pana and El Salvador.

Francis Tseng, a US-based software engineer, first discovered Wakanda’s inclusion on the tariff tracker. He told Reuters that the discovery left him “very confused”.

“I thought I misremembered the country from the movie and got it confused with something else,” he said.

Goods and commodities that were listed in the USDA’s tariff tracker included various livestock, such as “mules and hinnies”, cows and ducks.

Detailed information was also available for certain goods, according to NBC, with specific commodity groups included on drop-down menus.

Each grouping had separate entries featuring information on particular commodities. For example, cows were tariff-free along with frozen Chinese water chestnuts if imported to the United States.

Wakanda made its first appearance in the Marvel universe in 1966 as part of an edition of Fantastic Four. The Black Panther film, starring Chadwick Boseman, is one of the highest-grossing superhero movies of all time and scooped up an Oscar last year.

A spokesperson for the USDA told NBC that the Wakanda information has since been removed, much to the disappointment of social media users.

“Over the past few weeks, the foreign agricultural service staff who maintain the tariff tracker have been using test files to ensure that the system is running properly,” the spokesperson said.

“The Wakanda information should have been removed after testing and has now been taken down.”
