The update will formally allow users to post and share adult content, though this has been a standard on the site for a long time.

Social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, has updated their terms and conditions to explicitly permit adult content and pornography on the site.

Since its founding, X has allowed pornographic material for a long time in practice, and has been a haven for sex workers and adult content creators to promote their work. Reuters estimated that around 13% of all of X’s content was pornographic back in October 2022, just before Elon Musk took over the site.

However, these posts were not explicitly allowed as per the site’s rules. In an update to its terms and conditions though, adult content is now officially allowed.

“You may share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior, provided it’s properly labeled and not prominently displayed,” the new rules said.

But X went further as to defend the creation and sharing of adult content as it enshrined its permit in the new rules.

“We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed,” the updated rules read. “Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression.”

The site will restrict adult content for children and “for adult users who choose not to see it.”

Part of these restrictions mean that pornographic and adult images are kept from highly visible places, such as profile pictures. Creators are also tasked with labelling adult content so that they can be hidden from view for those trying to avoid it on the site.

Restricted content will include “content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors,” X’s new rules state.

Other recent moves that provide more spaces for adult content creators include upgrades to X’s communities tool, which allow people to form groups with other users. Users can create NSFW communities focused on sharing adult content that can now be hidden from users outside of the group.
