A female assailant has wounded three people before killing herself, according to police. A 36-year-old man said to be in a critical condition, and two women aged 32 and 27 are all in local hospitals.

Officials have named the suspect as Nasim Aghdam (39) and say they are still investigating a motive. Police say no evidence has come to light showing she knew the victims, however Aghdam had her own YouTube channel and had in the past posted material online venting anger at the company for perceived discrimination and filtering of her videos.

Commenting upon the attack, YouTube spokesman Chris Dale said: “Today it feels like the entire community of YouTube and all of the employees were victims of this crime. Our hearts go out to those who suffered in this particular attack,” he said.

Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai sent a memo to all employees addressing the incident: “I’m grateful to everyone inside and outside the company for the outpouring of support and best wishes. I am especially thankful to the first responders and our own security team who acted so quickly to keep people safe.

“I know a lot of you are in shock right now. Over the coming days, we will continue to provide support to help everyone in our Google family heal from this unimaginable tragedy.”

The Unfolding Incident

According to the BBC, Police in Northern California responded to an incident involving an “active shooter” at YouTube headquarters.

Gunshots were reported at the company’s San Bruno campus, 12 miles south of San Francisco. Ambulances are on the scene and the public have been warned to stay out of the area.

Variety reports that a San Bruno police dispatcher confirmed there is an ‘active investigation’, but would not provide any specific details.

A report from ABC stated: ‘the shooter is a white, adult female wearing a dark top and a headscarf.’

Vadim Lavrusik, a product manager at the company sent a series of tweets about the incident as it happened.

Active shooter at YouTube HQ. Heard shots and saw people running while at my desk. Now barricaded inside a room with coworkers.

Todd Sherman, another YouTube employee, used Twitter to report his experience, starting with a strange sound heard during a meeting:

Both employees report they got out of the building safely and were on their way home.
