ofcom fines age checks
“Having highly effective age checks on adult sites to protect children from pornographic content is non-negotiable,” Suzanne Cater, director of enforcement at Ofcom, said.

Ofcom has fined a pornography company £800,000 for failing to put in place robust age checks as required under the Online Safety Act.

Under the UK’s Online Safety Act, sites that allow pornographic material must use highly effective age assurance to prevent children from readily accessing that content.

Within days of this duty coming into force in July 2025, Ofcom launched investigations into the providers of dozens of adult sites, including Kick Online Entertainment SA.

Following investigation, Ofcom has fined Kick Online Entertainment SA £800,000 for failing to comply with these age check requirements between 25 July and 29 December 2025.

In response to Ofcom’s enforcement action, the company has since implemented a method of age assurance that is capable of being highly effective.

Ofcom is imposing a further fine of £30,000 on the platform for failing to provide information when requested by Ofcom, which is also mandated by the Online Safety Act. The regulator will fine Kick Online Entertainment SA a further £200 a day until the company responds, or over a period of 60 days, whichever is sooner.

“Having highly effective age checks on adult sites to protect children from pornographic content is non-negotiable. Any company that fails to meet this duty – or engage with us – can expect to face robust enforcement action, including significant fines,” Suzanne Cater, director of enforcement at Ofcom, said.

“We continue to investigate other sites under the UK’s age check rules and will take further action where necessary.”

This is not the first time an adult content platform has been fined for ill equipped age verification methods under the Online Safety Act.

AVA Group Ltd was fined £1m by the regulator over poor age checks across its 18 different adult sites, for not having adequate age verfication tools, and a further £50,000 for not providing required information to Ofcom.

There has, however, been recent pushback from porn providers amid the controversial rollout of age verification requirements on adult content.

The world’s most popular adult content site, Pornhub has said that it is pulling out of the UK following age checks. Current users who have made accounts with the porn site will still be able to access the site from the UK, but it will no longer take new users from the UK, the porn site said.

Pornhub called the UK’s age verifcation mandate a “failed system” upon announcing its exit from the UK.
