A Turkish farmer hopes to fool his cows into thinking they’re parading in a summer field as opposed to being locked in a barn in a bid to increase the amount of milk they produce.

Virtual reality headsets used by cattle breeder and rancher, Izzet Kocak, were specially developed and first tested by vets in Moscow before being moved to Turkey.

They are now in use by two cows on Kocak’s ranch – to decidedly positive effect.

According to a report by The Sun, the cows with VR goggles’ output has increased from 22 litres 27 litres.

“They are watching a green pasture and it gives them an emotional boost,” explained Kocak. The rancher plans to expand the experiment by purchasing and installing 10 more headsets.

Following the original tests on the concept in Moscow, Russia’s agriculture ministry observed that the headsets helped in decreasing anxiety in cows.

They further explained that the system was based on the principle that cows are better at perceiving shades of red than that of green and blue.

Environment plays a huge role in the yield and quality of a milk, the agriculture minister posited that cows with VR goggles can help optimise the environmental stimuli, resulting in a better yield of milk.

Agritech concerns are becoming more and more prevalent as the industry seeks solutions for demand that can be met in sustainable ways.

Last November, Scottish agritech startup Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS) raised £42.2 million as part of an oversubscribed Series B funding round. Their vertical farming platmorm offers a digitised method of optimal growing. John Deere also unveiled its first-ever self-driving tractor at this year’s CES tech showcase.
