Check out all the funding and acquisition news in Scottish tech from September and October!

Welcome to September and October 2026’s DIGIT Deal Roundup.

The sun may be setting early, but Scottish tech is certainly not resting as there’s been a steady current of funding deals throughout the months as we transition to Autumn.

We’ve seen major funding deals in biotech as well as a round of fintech investment.

All that, and more, coming up!

Funding

Scottish Climate Tech Calterra Secures £96k Funding

AI-powered climate-tech platform Calterra has been awarded £96,000 in SMART Grant funding from Scottish Enterprise to develop its technology for monitoring the long-term health of restored peatlands and woodlands.

The 14-month R&D project kicked off in September 2026 and will focus on improving Calterra’s digital monitoring, reporting and verification capabilities, with the aim of making it easier and more cost-effective to track how habitats recover over time.

A joint venture between AI consultancy New Gradient and Caledonian Climate, Calterra uses AI and Earth observation data to support habitat restoration projects.

Edinburgh Graduates’ AI Infrastructure Firm Expanse Raises $5.3m

Expanse has secured seed funding to develop software that predicts the computing resources required by AI workloads before they run, with the aim of reducing wasted capacity and helping organisations make better use of existing infrastructure.

AI infrastructure company Expanse has raised $5.3 million in a seed funding round led by Crane Venture Partners, with participation from PXN Ventures and angel investors including former DeepMind researchers and leaders from AI infrastructure teams.

The company, which was founded by four University of Edinburgh graduates, develops software designed to predict the GPU, CPU, memory and runtime requirements of AI workloads before execution begins.

Glasgow Medtech Firm Nami Surgical Secures £3.4m Funding

Glasgow-based medtech firm Nami Surgical has secured £3.4m, as part of a funding round extension led by £2m from the Scottish National Investment Bank, to further develop and commercialise its ultrasonic technology for robotic-assisted surgery.

The Bank is joined by existing investors Eos Advisory, which led Nami’s previous two funding rounds, Scottish Enterprise and the Investment Fund for Scotland (IFS), which is managed by Maven Capital Partners and delivered by the British Business Bank.

The funding will support the company’s commercialisation and expand its research and development team, creating five additional jobs at its headquarters at Hillington in southwest Glasgow.

Machine with Vision Secures Multi-million Newtwork Rail Contract

Scottish technology company Machines With Vision is targeting the global US$78 billion rail maintenance sector after securing a multi-million, multi-year contract with Network Rail, as imprecise defect location data is estimated to cost the industry US$6 billion a year worldwide through repeat visits and wasted crew time.

Beyond the significant financial cost, inaccurate defect location can also create a serious safety risk, unnecessarily exposing rail workers to potentially hazardous trackside environments as they search for defects that have been identified but cannot be precisely located.

Machines With Vision has developed innovative technology that uses cameras fitted to the underside of inspection trains to build a highly accurate image-based geospatial map of any railway network, enabling higher levels of safety, efficiency, and automation for railway infrastructure inspection and maintenance.

Scottish BioTech MiAlgae Secures £2.5m for Grangemouth Expansion

Scottish biotech company MiAlgae has secured a £2.5m investment from the Scottish National Investment Bank (“the Bank”) to support the company’s new commercial-scale production facility in Grangemouth.

MiAlgae produces an Omega-3 powder using by-products from the whisky distilling process. Its plant-based product provides an alternative source of Omega-3, which is traditionally derived from wild-caught fish. Omega-3 is a sought-after ingredient in the aquaculture feed and pet nutrition markets due to properties that promote healthy skin and coats, cognitive function and joint health.

MiAlgae’s Omega-3 powder is sustainable, fully traceable and supports Scotland’s circular economy while reducing reliance on wild-caught fish. The company’s pioneering approach gained international recognition in 2024 when it was shortlisted for The Earthshot Prize under the “Revive our Oceans” category, in recognition of its scale-up potential and ecological impact.

DeepTech Firm iGii Secures £22.7M

iGii, the deep tech advanced materials company behind the proprietary carbon nanomaterial Gii, today announces £22.7 million in new funding to accelerate the commercialisation and industrial adoption of its technology. Grown rather than mined, Gii can perform across many different applications and industries, giving manufacturers a high-performing material platform from which to differentiate their next generation of products.

The round comprises an £11.7 million Series B investment led by the Scottish National Investment Bank (“The Bank”), with additional backing from PXN Ventures and Archangels, alongside £11 million funding from Scottish Enterprise.

This investment lands as global supply chains are under growing pressure, with access to critical materials such as platinum and gold constrained by concentrated supply and geopolitical uncertainty. That has sharpened the debate around material sovereignty – the ability of industries and nations to secure the materials they depend on, rather than relying on exposed global supply chains. At the same time, the UK Government’s industrial strategy places advanced materials at the centre of rebuilding domestic manufacturing capability. Together, that raises the value of materials that can deliver greater performance while reducing reliance on constrained supply.

Merck and iGii Sign Master Services Agreement and Development Programme

iGii, the deep tech advanced materials company behind the proprietary Gii carbon nanotechnology, today announced the signing of a Master Services Agreement (“MSA”) and development programme with Merck, establishing a collaboration framework between the companies.

Gii is iGii’s proprietary carbon nanotechnology designed for deployment across multiple industrial environments through scalable manufacturing processes. The technology combines ultra-high carbon purity, exceptionally large electrochemically active surface area, anti-fouling behaviour and flexibility across multiple application environments.

Jean-Christophe Granier, CEO of iGii, said: “We are delighted to formalise this collaboration with Merck. What excites us most is the recognition that next-generation industrial and analytical systems will increasingly depend on breakthroughs at the material layer. Merck’s scientific capability, global scale, and position across life science and advanced technology environments make them an exceptional organisation for iGii to work alongside as we continue expanding the deployment potential of Gii across future technologies and industrial environments.”

Acquisitions

Quorum Cyber Announces Intent to Acquire Ontinue

Quorum Cyber today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Ontinue, a managed extended detection and response (MXDR) provider delivering non-stop managed security through its Agentic Security Operations Center (SOC).

In an era when AI has redefined cybersecurity exploits and countermeasures, the proposed transaction would unite two Microsoft-focused companies with complementary strengths in managed detection and response, proactive risk reduction, incident response, professional services and AI-first security operations.

The combined organisation would move beyond point AI tools embedded in individual workflows to unlock the broader value of AI innovation: intelligent, agentic security systems that continuously perceive risk, reason across context, and defend at machine speed, while keeping people in control of strategy, guardrails and critical decisions.
