Suleyman is best known as the co-founder of DeepMind, an AI research lab that was bought by Google in 2014. He’s also the co-founder of Inflection AI, a company that’s been developing machine learning and generative AI hardware and apps since 2022.

Following his appointment to Microsoft, the entrepreneur will now lead on all of the Big Tech company’s consumer AI products and research—which includes Copilot, Bing, and Edge.

To take on the role, Suleyman will be moving away from his role as CEO at Inflection AI, a position he’s held since the company was first founded.

Inflection’s new chief executive has been named as Sean White, who has previously served in high-profile roles such as chief R&D officer for Mozilla.

At Microsoft AI, Suleyman will be joined by Karén Simonyan, another of Inflection AI’s co-founders, who will serve as chief scientist at the department.

Numerous artificial intelligence engineers, researchers, and builders from Inflection AI will also move to Microsoft alongside the two co-founders.

Suleyman’s full announcement post on X reads: “I’m excited to announce that today I’m joining @Microsoft as CEO of Microsoft AI. I’ll be leading all consumer AI products and research, including Copilot, Bing and Edge. My friend and longtime collaborator Karén Simonyan will be Chief Scientist, and several of our amazing teammates have chosen to join us.

“@InflectionAI will continue on its mission under a new CEO, and look to reach more people than ever by making its API widely available to developers and businesses the world over.

“It’s been an amazing journey, with so much more to come. Thank you to everyone for your support. Things really are just getting started.”

Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, shared a blog post on Suleyman’s appointment, in which he said: “I’ve known Mustafa for several years and have greatly admired him as a founder of both DeepMind and Inflection, and as a visionary, product maker, and builder of pioneering teams that go after bold missions.”

The recruitment of Mustafa Suleyman is but the latest move by Microsoft to help secure its advancement in the world of AI.

Just months ago, Microsoft hired another artificial intelligence pioneer, OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, albeit briefly.

Altman was initially ousted by OpenAI’s board due to concerns around his ability to lead. However, and just days after being fired, Altman returned to the company he co-founded following an agreement “in principle” that was reached.
