OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Enterprises Amid Downturn in Traffic

OpenAI launches a premium business version of ChatGPT in the midst of a declining number of users.

ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot which was the fastest-growing application in history when it launched, and lost 10% of traffic two months in a row over the summer, according to a report from Similarweb.

Now, to remedy the situation, OpenAI announced the launch of a new ChatGPT: ChatGPT Enterprise. This iteration of the AI bot is designed for business users, offering enhanced privacy and security safeguards.

The new enterprise version of the chatbot is not trained on business data or conversations, and the models do not glean information from the users, according to OpenAI. The conversations through the app are also encrypted in transit and at rest, and enterprise subscribers can use OpenAI’s APIs to fully customise the tool.

“Today marks another step towards an AI assistant for work that helps with any task, is customized for your organization, and that protects your company data,” said OpenAI in a blog post.

This comes off the back of concerns expressed by some companies such as Apple and Amazon, over data security worries, who restricted the use of the chatbot for their employees.

OpenAI was reported to have spent $540 million (£428m) last year to develop ChatGPT, according to The Information in May. On top of this, some estimates pin the daily operational cost of the ChatGPT to be in the ballpark of $700K (£554.9K).

Despite the high cost to run and develop the tool, OpenAI only made $30m (£23.7) in revenue in the 2022 fiscal year, pointing to a need to get large industry players on board with the tool.

The new enterprise model will harness the technology of OpenAI’s latest GPT-4 model, but offer an extended experience compared to the version designed for individual subscribers.

On top of performing up to two times faster, users can also process four times longer inputs or files. The enterprise version also allows access to the data analysis tool known as Code Interpreter.

“ChatGPT Enterprise has cut down research time by an average of an hour per day, increasing productivity for people on our team. It’s been a powerful tool that has accelerated testing hypotheses and improving our internal systems,” said Jorge Zuniga, head of data systems and Integrations at Asana, who was an early adopter of the new tool.
