The streaming services cites what it deems as “abuses of its powerful platform” to demand regulatory action against the tech giant.

Spotify – and seven other companies – are demanding regulatory action against Apple for what they deem to be “anti competitive behaviour.”

In an open letter to Margrethe Vestager, the European Commissioner for Competition, the companies – all involved in similar businesses – demanded “meaningful regulatory action against Apple’s long-standing anti-competitive practices in Europe.”

Spotify’s long-running complaints against Apple stem from a number of policies, including the money Apple takes from subscriptions made on the iPhone and the rules in its App Store.

In the letter, the companies – spearheaded by Spotify – claim that regulators have not done enough to stop Apple thriving under unfair practices, calling for “urgent action from the EU to end Apple’s abusive behaviours” with regards to speeding up an ongoing case that relates to accusations of anti-competitive behaviour by Apple, as well as demanding that the upcoming Digital Markets Act is used to crack down on Apple’s policies.

The letter, signed by Daniel Ek, Spotify’s founder and chief executive, as well as the leaders of Basecamp, Deezer, Proton and Schibsted, says: “The clock is ticking. It’s time for regulators to address the ever-growing chorus of complaints against Apple, a critical step in stopping Apple’s continued abuses of its powerful platform.”

Spotify itself has been subject to heavy criticism in the past, mainly due to the power it has to decide payments to artists showcased on its platform and the relatively small amounts that these revenues amount to.

Since Spotify stared conducting public attacks against Apple in 2019, the big tech company hit back claiming that Spotify wished to (?)from (?) the App Store ecosystem without contributing to it.
